Scaling and root planing continues to be our
basic therapy in the management of gum disease.
We’ve known for years that the bacteria
in dental calculus cause the gums to be inflamed
and bleed easily. Removal of this calculus is
the second step in the fight against gum disease,
preceded only by the taking of medications. Our
skilled hygienists scale below the gum line until
the roots have a smooth, velvety surface.
One of the main goals of Scaling and root planing is for pocket depths to go down. Pockets are depths measured in millimeters with a probe. Normal pockets are 1 to 3 millimeters in depth. Periodontal disease is usually associated with deeper pockets; 5's or higher. A recent testimonial from a patient describes her sucsess story. Click here to view her story.
Because we can’t see below the gum line
with the naked eye, scaling and root planing
was traditionally followed by gum surgery to
allow for a more complete removal of burnished
calculus. Our space age technology allows us
to see under the gum line with perioscopy, whereby
we receive a 100 percent removal of burnished
root calculus.
When gum inflammation is properly suppressed
with medications, scaling and root planing is
not a painful process. It is normally carried
out simply with local anesthetics to numb the
gums. For some people, however, local anesthesia
is not sufficient to guarantee a comfortable,
pain free experience. For these individuals we
offer all of our services, including scaling
and root planing, with IV, intra-muscular or
oral sedation. Your comfort is our number one
concern.
